Of Watermelons, Hearts, and Spiritual Formation

“Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.”
– Proverbs 4:23

Your heart is a valuable treasure to God! If we want to become the people God dreams of us becoming, we must guard our hearts. We must carefully cultivate what captures our attention, affection, and where we invest our time, energy, money, and care.

This 3-minute video tells an interesting history about some very valuable watermelons:

“There’s a problem with watermelons. They will cross with any gourd, cucumber, pumpkin, other melon, or squash in the vicinity. You have to keep it a mile apart from any other vegetable or else it will form vegetable mongrels.”

As Sören Kierkegaard reminds us, purity of heart is to will one thing. Let’s commit ourselves to Jesus, and allow Him to be the primary shaper of our hearts & lives.

Now, keep in mind, this video is not a perfect analogy. Whereas these Bradford watermelons were kept under virtual lock and key to protect them from outside influences, a person with a well-formed heart in Christ will be sent back into the world on mission with God to demonstrate the reality of the Kingdom. They will become influencers rather than influenced.

In any case, to paraphrase Scripture (Matthew 10:31), you are worth more than many watermelons to our Father! May you redirect your gaze toward the One who is worthy of your full attention.
